Dragons' summer comes to an early end

Doncaster’s finals campaign came to an unfortunate end last weekend, with all three teams losing their respective finals.

The division one women fell to Essendon 9-19, the men’s thirds lost to Upwey 4-8, and the men’s fourths losing to Williamstown 4-5.

The women’s firsts battled hard all day. After falling behind 0-2 early, they scored five in the second to claim the lead. Later in the fifth, they plated another four runs in the to tie the game up at 9-9.

But in the end, the Dragons could not keep up with the potent, high scoring Essendon offence. The Bombers scored another 10 runs in the next two innings to mercy the Dragons and advance to the grand final against Springvale.

After finishing fourth on the ladder, the men’s thirds faced a tough opposition in the form of first-placed Upwey. The Dragons were able to keep a lid on the Tigers’ offence, bending but never breaking, allowing only eight runs for the game.

However, the Dragons had trouble finding the scoreboard themselves. The offence was unable to string much of anything together for most of the game, and four runs in the last proved to be too little too late, with Upwey winning 4-8. Upwey will face Berwick in the grand final.

Despite out-hitting their opponents 13 hits to three, the men’s fourths fell short against Williamstown, with one big inning hurting the Dragons.

Doncaster worked hard for their runs and manufactured an early lead, but a couple of walks and a few timely hits in the fifth inning gave the Wolves a lead they would not relinquish. Williamstown will face Sunshine in the grand final.

Congratulations to all three teams on fantastic seasons.
